Post office Ltd. are conducting a six week consultation before making a final decision on closure and we need your help if we are to keep this vital community facility open!

In December 2006 the Government initiated a national public consultation on a range of proposed measures to modernize and reshape the Post Office network.  In it’s response to the consultation the Government announced the proposed compulsory compensated closure of up to 2,500 branches.

In order to deliver the changes Post Office Ltd. is now implementing it’s “Network Change” Programme and in doing so has divided the United Kingdom into 47 areas.  A local plan will be prepared for each area.  As part of the Area Plan for East Yorkshire with Bassetlaw and North Lincolnshire, Post Office Ltd. is proposing to close Brackenborough Road Post Office branch on a permanent basis.  A six-week local public consultation will provide an opportunity for those that are interested in or likely to be affected by any of the proposed changes to give their views on the proposals for the future provision of Post Office services in that area.

If the decision is taken to permanently close this branch then we expect that this would take place in January 2008, at the earliest.

Please note that 12th November 2007 is the closing date of the local public consultation for this area and all comments must be received by that date if they are to be considered.

The Post Office have announced that Brackenborough Road Post Office will close on January 2nd unless we can change their mind.

Do you agree that it is surplus to requirements?  You know how busy it is, how often you have to queue and how essential the services offered are to people living around here.

Brackenborough Road Post Office deals with thousands of pension and benefit payments for local families and helps people pay hundreds of bills in various ways. It takes in 15 or 20 sacks of mail each day including large numbers for local businesses. There are dozens of other services, including banking and insurance and even fishing licenses! It is a focal point for the local community where local people meet and chat. How can the powers that be think that this successful post office should go?

YOU can help fight this decision. There are details about who to write to below.

This campaign will continue until the consultation closes on November 12th. Please join us at events we plan to put on to show public support for our local post office and to encourage people to campaign to keep it. One of these is a public meeting on 25th October in the Town Hall. Look for information in the press and locally.

What you need to do, as soon as you can, is:-

Write a letter or email objecting to the closure to Adrian Wales, Network Development Manager, Post Office Ltd, c/o National Consultation Team, FREEPOST CONSULTATION TEAM or email consultation@postoffice.co.uk

Points to include are:-

The huge difficulties there would be if everyone had to go to Northgate where queues often reach the street, even at the moment

The huge difficulties of getting there and back, especially for older people, when it is up and downhill and the bus service is poor. And to think of the carbon footprint created by people making extra car trips into the town centre!
